Kovacs is brought back with a portable defibrillator device. Kovacs recalls his sister as a child, and killing his father, and being recruited into CTAC as a youth. The young sister Rei is placed into foster care. Tak is taken off planet for training by a man named Jaeger. Rei tells Kovacs he is dying, his injuries are too severe, but he pleads with her to save this sleeve. She says Ortega is OK. Much later he seems better but still weak, on a couch. The siblings have not seen each other for 250 years. Rei recounts her life, being sold to the yakuza. Kovacs has another seizure and recalls his CTAC training, he is back in his original skin as an adult.

The squad suits up in the black armor and goes on a mission. He encounters Rei and recognizes her necklace. The siblings bond right away join forces and kill CTAC and yakuza until only they are left. Tak goes with Rei to a bar. They are now fugitives from the yakuza and Protectorate.

They go to a wilderness area and hike toward a mountain, looking for a place they went to as kids. They find songspire, Rei gets impatient. She wants to find allies to help them. They camp for the night but are captured. Tak wakes tied onto a long rope bridge. Quellcrist Falconer is the leader, she recruits the two to her side. Quell seems to see deep into his character. Rei and Tak vow to stick together.

They start training with Falconer. She displays superb fighting skills and teaches mind over matter and teamwork. They are Envoys. They go on their first mission, entering individual pods they are cast, Tak has some trouble returning. Tak doesn't get along with another Envoy, de Soto. Later Quell addresses her army, she foresees the Meths and the ills of Stack Culture and immortality. She proposes a 100 year limit Trojan into the Central Core. Slowly the group volunteer to be with her. A five man team volunteers to attack the garrison, Tak is one.

The team breaks into a facility unopposed, Quell uploads a program. Leaving, the alarms are set off and only Tak is captured by the CTAC.

TaK is grilled and beaten by his original trainer Jaeger in VR, Quell arrives to rescue Tak, they escape the Construct. Back at their Base on Harlan's World Rei says she has had enough, Tak will stay with Quell. In a quiet moment Quell tells Tak she is Nadia Makita, the person who invented stacks and transferring consciousness. Tak is smitten and kisses her. They have sex. In the morning Tak peeks at her notebook and adds a bit.

Tak goes to look for Rei. Something odd starts happening to others.

Kovacs wakes up, Rei saved his sleeve. Rei had gone back to Harlan's World after...

Kovacs recalls the massive attack on the Envoy Base. Most were killed, Tak survives with the big songspire tree. A frantic girl says it was monsters, another man shoots her dead. De Soto is badly wounded and says he did it to himself. CTAC troopers approach with Jaeger. Tak kills de Soto in the back of the neck. A forest fire engulfs the camp. Tak runs toward Quell, Rei is with her. Tak tells Quell to proceed with the mission, he will provide cover. The women take off in a shuttle, but the craft is shot down. The CTAC looks for Tak, who hides in the ashes.

Kovacs asks Rei about the shuttle explosion, she can't remember. He notices dust motes in the air, like fireflies. He follows them to a pod room. He sees Hemingway, the snake lady, the girl from the museum.

Back in the shuttle that time, Rei had betrayed Quell moments before the explosion, she had a planned escape while Falconer was killed. Kovacs realizes then Rei was a back up and she had done a Judas. Rei said she did it for Kovacs.
