Summary Out of the Past
Waking up in a new body 250 years after his death, Takeshi Kovacs discovers he's been resurrected to help a titan of industry solve his own murder.
In a distant future, in a dystopic society where people's consciousness and memories are stored in devices and then resleeved into another body, the Alcatraz prisoner Takeshi Kovacs is awaken 250 years after his death. He has recollections of his and his beloved companion Ava deaths and soon he learns that the upper-class millionaire Laurens Bancroft is the responsible for his awakening in a body of a strong man to investigate who has killed him.
Synopsis Out of the Past
Altered Carbon S1 E1A body floats in water, a wire connected to the head.
A man and woman shower and wash blood off each other. They have sex. Resting after in an apartment he has a smoke and many guns on the kitchen table. The man, an Asian, goes to a window and overlooks a large metropolis at night. He darkens the room and senses attackers. Just as they grab guns the wall blows in.
Takeshi Kovacs is revived from a plastic bag. Techs remove the goo but Kovacs starts to fight. He recalls the gunfight 250 years earlier. Despite putting up a good fight his female partner is killed and a German squad leader takes him prisoner.
Kovacs breaks a tech's nose and takes down another, he demands to know where he is and a mirror. He seems shocked he is now a Caucasian, on Alcatraz Prison on earth. He then calms down and goes for a shower.
In a room he gets a briefing with other ex-cons. The cortical stack is explained, a device in which his consciousness can be placed in any body or sleeve, into the cervical vertebrae. They are warned to avoid trauma to the head or neck. He recalls the voice of Quellcrist Falconer, his old girlfriend and terrorist leader.
Remembering, Kovacs recalls the German shooting the woman, he fought back and was shot in the chest.
At Alcatraz the Warden explains Kovacs is the property of a man named Bancroft and has been given an enhanced military grade body.
A police detective Kristen Ortega arrives and says she will drive him to Bancroft. Outside the prison protesters chant for dead persons' rights.
In a flying car Kovacs looks at the Bay Cityscape and asks Ortega who Bancroft is, learning he is 350 years old a rich "Meth". She takes him to a skyscraper above the clouds. She makes a hard landing on the lawn, he tells her to look up Takeshi Kovacs.
A blonde woman, Miriam Bancroft, comes out and has words with Kristen, another meth was supposed to deliver Kovacs. A police black and white lands and Ortega's partner takes out the handcuffed Envoy, releasing him.
Inside the mansion Miriam shows a glowing blue tree, very rare and expensive. She takes him to Laurens Bancroft's study.
Bancroft makes small talk, the meth is his son, and gives Kovacs Falconer's old notebook. Kovacs asks what is going on.
Kovacs is offered a full pardon, or reduced to time served, once the investigation is over, plus 50 million UN credits, if he solves Bancroft's recent murder.
Kristin investigates Kovacs on her desk computer, she is worried about his skill set. Her partner tells her not to worry.
Bancroft shows where his head had been hit, the blood splatter remains. He has had a full remote storage backup even though his stack was destroyed. In his observatory he shows Kovacs a satellite, receiving his full stack backup every 45 minutes. Kovacs says no , Bancroft says take a day to think it over.
Later he sits by the water, he imagines his sister sitting beside him. In the bar district he takes street drugs. He wanders, recalls the past, confused and overwhelmed by the direct advertising Then Kristen appears and slaps an ad broadcast blocker on his neck and offers to buy a drink. In a strip joint she recites his past as an Envoy and mercenary. She also says after a full investigation Bancroft committed suicide. Kovacs gets up to go to a brothel, the Raven hotel.
The desk clerk offers a variety of selections. Russian gangsters appear, they assault him . The leader beats him up but Kovacs manages to pay the clerk with a blood DNA sample, suddenly mini-guns lower from the ceiling and take out the Russians. The clerk helps with a shotgun. Kristin appears in the lobby, with her partner they ID the dead Russian hit-man, Dmitri. The Russian has an illegal duplicate stack, this one is destroyed in the battle. Kovacs deduces this proves Bancroft's Death was not a suicide.
Sometime later, Kovacs then goes out to any alley, ready to kill himself. He has a vision of his old girlfriend Quell. She urges him to finish the original mission. Then he goes to get a snake tattoo and calls Bancroft he'll take the case.
